Think/Pair/Share is a quick comprehension strategy that works well for any content area and is easy to add to lesson plans!

What is it?
Think/Pair/Share (TPS) allows students the "think time" they need to process and make sense of ideas and concepts. It's a simple way to keep the students engaged, but it allleviates the embarrassment some students feel over being called out in front of the class.

How to use it*:
1. Individually students think silently about a question or topic posed by the teacher.
2. Students pair up to discuss ideas.
3. Students share their responses with class.

How much time does this take?
Teachers use TPS in a variety of ways. If you are asking the students to do a quick "process" of some new information, it's best to keep the time short. For example, give a minute to think, a minute to pair up, and a few minutes to share responses. However, if you're asking critical thinking questions that require more depth, or a question that may require multiple responses, you can certainly adjust the time to what best fits your students' needs.

Don't forget to MODEL the strategy the first time you use it in class. As always, I can help you do this!
